Steam Room Requirements

Although steam rooms can take many forms, be made of differing materials etc. there are a number of common elements that will apply to all dedicated steam rooms.

Floor - The flooring for a steam room must:-

A) be waterproof
B) be level around the base of the steam room enclosure to ensure a good seal
C) incorporate a fall of 1 in 50 towards the drain from all sides and be free from bumps or hollows which could prevent drainage
D) include a drain, normally centrally located within the steam room

Ventilation - The steam room is normally vented from the centre of the ceiling directly to the outside environment and not back into the building. Such ventilation is normally achieved by convection but can be encouraged by the introduction of specialised fans if required.

Assembly - If using modular (typically acrylic) steam rooms ensure there is sufficient space available to assemble the room prior to locating in its final location. Such rooms are normally assembled from outside the cabin and therefore need additional space of approximately one metre all round during assembly. Modular cabins are normally available in a variety of standardised sizes.

Many people prefer a tiled interior. For these cabins we use a self supporting structure having walls and ceiling composed of 70mm ultra high density insulation which is then tiled according to customers requirements.

Steam generator - The steam generator should be selected according to both the size and construction materials used. Services - An electrical supply and a clean water supply will be required for the generator. In situations with hard water it will also be wise to include a water softener to prolong the life of the steam generator. Suitable provision should be made for drainage in both the steam room itself and also adjacent to the steam generator. A diagram of the required services is available here
